Three Island
Crossing
23rd
Anniversary Celebration
August 9, 2008

This year
we will be
honoring Roy Allen
Roy Allen was born December 2nd, 1929 in Emmett,
Idaho to Henry and Willa Allen. He is the first of five children. Most of Roy's
childhood was spent in the Gooding and King Hill area. He was riding horses by
the age of five. At twelve years old he was hired by a rancher on Clover Creek
to drive a team of horses raking hay. He was too small to lift the harness up on
the workhorses and had to have help with that. Roy joined the Marines on
his 17th birthday and later received an honorable medical discharge. He loved to
rodeo, riding bareback horses. His other passions are camping and big game
hunting in his beloved Idaho mountains. Roy and Jean Doner were married in 1955
bringing two girls, Barbara and Joyce and one son, John whom Jean raised as her
own. Later they added to this family another daughter, Lori and a son Jim.
Roy has worked various jobs on the ranch and in the
sawmills. He also has been a heavy equipment operator, done custom haying and
was a big game packer and guide as a second "fun" job. Horses have always been a
part of his life. In the fall of 1974 his life was changed forever and
drastically. While working as a lineman for a company that contracted Idaho
Power jobs he was up on a 40-foot pole which broke at the base, driving him feet
first into the ground. This resulted in multiple fractures and dislocations on
both legs and he was told he would be in a wheelchair and never walk again.
After spending six months in the hospital and rehab he was not only walking
again but also was riding horses, which was his biggest concern. At this point
he had to learn a trade that was less physical so decided to become a saddle
maker, in 1985. Roy, his son Jim and several other horsemen thought it would be
great fun to cross the Snake River on horse back in the same location as the
pioneers had done 100 years earlier. So with no life jackets and no rescuers
available they crossed starting on the south bank. There was a small audience
present to cheer them on. This was the beginning of what is now a highly
expanded and attended event known as the Three Island Crossing held annually on
the 2nd Saturday in August. Roy is the only man from the original group who is
still making the crossing and is also the oldest man to cross. In the 2007
Crossing, at the age of 77, he crossed the river driving a team of horses. Also,
this was the first time this young team of horses had crossed the river pulling
a wagon.
Roy is the past President of the Idaho Houndsmen
Association. He served many years as a member of the Three Island Rodeo
Association and is currently a member of the Southern Idaho Draft Horses and
Mule Association. He has been a member of the Three Island Crossing organization
since it originated in 1988 serving as a board member several years and Wagon
Master for three years.
Roy is now retired, but is still making and repairing
saddles and tack. He works many hours on his and his son Jim's small ranch in
King Hill. The family has grown to 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
